The essay is not a test of what you know. It is a test of whether you can hold one argument for two thousand words.
Every year we meet candidates who cleared four optional papers and failed on the essay. They are not weak students. They have simply never had an essay marked properly.
The paper rewards three things: a thesis that can be disagreed with, an outline that a stranger could follow, and paragraphs that each do one job. It punishes memorised introductions, quotations that decorate rather than argue, and the habit of listing points instead of building a case.
The only fix is repetition with correction. Write one essay a week, hand it to somebody who will mark it honestly, and rewrite the weakest two paragraphs. Twelve weeks of that changes a candidate more than a year of reading.
